Dear Congresswoman Kaptur:
Thank you for your June 18, 2013 letter regarding concerns about the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's anticipated cleanup at the W.C. Reed Playfield Site (Park) in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Park has been closed since December 2012 due to the discovery of high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the soil. EPA is working with the City of Cleveland, the owner of the Park, to discuss potential cleanup options and community concerns. EPA will make every effort to maintain the existing natural features of the Park, including the trees. However, decision about maintaining or removing the trees in the Park ultimately rest with the City. EPA will work with the City to schedule a public meeting when funding for the cleanup is secured.
Again, thank you for your letter. If you have further questions, please contact me or your staff may contact the Region 5 Congressional Liaisons.
Sincerely,
Susan Hedman
Regional Administrator
Region 5
Chicago, IL.
